How do I get rid of belly fat?

Ariane,

I have a belly fat question: Is there anything specific I should be eating  - or not – to get rid of the belly fat? I don’t eat soy, which I know causes bloating. Luckily I’ve never been a fan of soy products – and corn, which I know is another food that causes bloating/puffiness. I’ve actually been eating pretty cleanly. The NutriBullet helped, which is awesome.  I’m getting a bit bored with my typical mixes, so if you have any yummy NutriBullet concoctions, I’ll take them.

Granted, I have to seriously worked on my ab strength but where I can see changes is my legs and my butt but I’m not seeing much change in my mid-section. Even with my clean eating the belly is still there. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Tamara

Tamara,

This blog post will help answer your question partially. Additionally, belly fat is in large part hormonally driven. That means once you clean up your diet (no sugar, no alcohol, no starch or grains) you also need to control your stress levels. Negative stress forces your body into cortisol production, which initially helps you lose fat, but if it’s ongoing, your body goes into protective mode and you gain belly fat. Stress levels can be increased due to lack of sleep, life stressors and emotional stress.

Estrogen can also be to blame for belly fat. If you work out in the second part of your menstrual cycle, you’re more likely to drop body fat than in the first part because estrogen levels drop. Lower estrogen levels in post-menopausal women can also promote belly fat storage, especially if it’s not balanced by progesterone.

images-1

In order to control body fat, your best bet is to prevent insulin spikes. Insulin tells your body to store fat and is prompted by a diet high in carbs from sugar and starches. Then, focus on stress control (meditation, yoga, walking, exercise). You can control estrogen levels by avoiding using plastics and pesticides and keeping your caffeine intake at bay. You should also eat lots of fiber as that binds with excess estrogen and removes it from your body.

The disappointing news is that a flat stomach is not the result of doing 100 sit-ups a day, but the result of proper clean eating, stress control, effective exercise and hormone balancing.

We are all born with a six-pack but the reason we don’t see it is that it is covered by body fat, so unless you drop your body fat below 22-20% as a woman and about 17-15% as a guy, you’re not going to see those rockstar abs.

Sugar: More addictive than cocaine!

Hi Ariane,

I could use a little pep talk.  I have fallen off the detox but I’m going to try to start again tomorrow. I mentioned I have a huge problem with sugar, but I’d started to feel really good the first few days of the detox. I want to try to get through one whole week eating clean and I’m coming to your class at 6:30 after work.

Cheers, Monica

Monica,
there is no need to ‘start again’. All you’re going to do is to continue what you started. This detox is not about being perfect. There is no such thing as perfection. I think you learned that eating sugar is neither making you feel good, nor does it help you get to your goal. That’s in important lesson you have learned and you wouldn’t have made that connection had you not had sugar. So, just move on, eat clean, drink  lots of water and don’t give sugar so much power over you. The more you demonize it, the more you place that ‘forbidden’ and ‘bad’ sign on it, the more you will want it. Why? Your brain simply doesn’t process negatives, so when you say “I don’t want…” you are actually telling your brian “I want….”, so the way you speak to yourself has a huge impact on your behavior. The more you say “i can’t eat sugar”, the more you’ll be drawn to it. Instead, make peace with it. Know that it makes you feel crappy, fat, unhealthy and creates cravings for more.
Next time you’re tempted to eat sugar, think about how you feel after eating it. Think about the consequences and then ask yourself if it’s worth it to you. If it is, then have a little. If not, then find something better to enjoy that actually makes you feel great and enjoy feeling the power you have over your own decision-making.
Sugar1
Also, try speaking to yourself positively. You definitely didn’t lose it or fell off the wagon. You just ate something that makes you feel ill, so let it be. You can try speaking to yourself in encouraging ways, such as “I don’t want sugar because it makes me feel awful. Sugar makes me sick. I crave veggies and lean proteins because they make me feel light, strong and healthy”, or something along the lines. The guilt trip you’re on right now is not conducive to establishing a healthy relationship to food. And, just because you had sugar doesn’t mean you’re a bad person or have no will power. Sugar sure is more addictive than cocaine (not even joking), so it’s a matter of breaking the cycle.
How you feel about food has a huge impact on how you respond to it. If you’re giving sugar so much power over you, you’ll always cave in when it’s in front of you. But, if you develop an aversion to it based on your negative response to eating it, you will no longer crave it.
This process takes time and certainly doesn’t happen overnight, so keep working on that. I’ll see you tonight!
Ariane

The next NutriBullet Detox starts November 7th! Look and feel fab by Thanksgiving!

The next NutriBullet Detox starts November 7th, 2013.
If you’re ready to get your body back on track, then join our 21-Day Nutribullet Detox. You can participate remotely or you can opt to take indoor or outdoor boot camp classes in addition to your Detox program. It ends right before Thanksgiving – just in time to look and feel amazing when you meet your family. Past participants have lost up to 20 lbs in 3 weeks, and up to 5% body fat loss. That’s a lot when you look at this:

How do you lose 20 lbs in 21 days? NutriBullet Detox!

Yesterday a group of participants finished their 21-day NutriBullet. They committed to giving up alcohol, sugar and junk food and drinking two NutriBullet shakes per day. Some stuck to only protein and veggies for 21 days and some others decided to add back foods they had eliminated in the first week.

The results were inspiring once again. The winner of the NutriBullet Detox is determined not just by weight lost because the number on the scale doesn’t tell you the truth. We measure your weight, your body fat percentage and inches. Then I calculate how much body fat was lost and how much muscle was gained. These measures determine how much your body composition has changed.

Daniel blew everyone away by losing 19.4 lbs. He stuck to the program and ate only lean proteins with vegetables 3x a day and drank 2 NutriBullet shakes. He had signed up for the Detox because his brother is getting married and he wanted to feel and look great. Take a look at his unbelievable changes:

Many people asked about his secret. Well, the “secret” was that he stuck to the plan and ran 3 miles every day. People, there is no magic pill. It’s 80-90% diet and 10-20% exercise. Do the work and don’t wait for miracles to happen.

Kara won first place since she managed to drop loads of body fat while putting on muscle. A difficult feat because muscle only builds when calories are not cut too much and when you eat adequate protein. She made it happen.

1st Place: Kara:
Weight loss: 6 lbs
4.3% of her original weight lost
Body fat % loss: 4.4%
Lean muscle gained: 2 lbs
Fat lost: 8 lbs

2nd Place: Daniel:

Weight loss: 19.4 lbs
9.6 % of his original weight lost
Body fat % loss: 3.2%
Lean muscle lost: 8.2 lbs (when you initially lose weight and cut calories muscle loss is quite normal)
Fat lost: 11.2 lbs

3rd Place: Laika:
Weight loss: 3.6 lbs
2% of her original weight lost
Body fat % loss: 2%
Lean muscle gained: .8 lbs
Fat lost: 4.6 lbs

Who Won the NutriBullet Giveaway?

In August we called all our FACEBOOK friends to enter into winning a NUTRIBULLET. We got a lot of responses and randomly chose a winner by drawing names from a hat:

The winner is Erin!  She promises to give it to her dad. We look forward to hearing how he will put it to use!

If you want to find out about upcoming giveaways and contests, please friend us here

Cheers, Ariane

  • Erin O’Brien I would love to win a Nutribullet for my dad Jerry L O’Brien. He seemed intrigued by the Detox when I told him about it over the weekend. My dad was the one who did all the cooking growing up and continues to do so today. While he receives a subscription to Cooking Light, he also receives one for Bon Appetite (read – you don’t ever have a bad meal when he’s cooking…it just might not be that good for you). My dad is overweight, takes medication for high cholesterol and high blood pressure. He is active in that he walks the golf course multiple times a week as part of his “job” (he’s retired), but because of his weight I don’t know how much his game has improved. If my dad wins the Nutribullet, I will sign him up for the September Detox. I feel that he would benefit from having a quick and easy option for nutrition while on the course and also at home. He mentioned wanting to come back and visit for Thanksgiving, I would like to know that he was in better shape to attack the four flights of stairs up to my apartment because we all know the turkey dinner he prepares in said apartment will be delish…and I will make sure it’s good for us!
  • Sarah Zarrow I’d love to win one to share with my aunt–we’re both trying to make healthy changes, and while we’re good at exercising and cutting out junk, getting enough veggies is a challenge. We’re both on the go all day, and there’s only so many interesting ways to make cut-up veggies. And we’re sick of expensive salads! This seems like the perfect solution to our health/budget/commuting concerns.
  • Monique Hoppe I would love to win the NutriBullet for me and the little one growing in my belly.

I am not satisfied with the blender I own. While I love green shakes, my current blender cannot get them smooth enough, which makes for an unfortunate taste experience
! I would like to replace some of my snacks by mean green smoothies – this would greatly enhance the way I eat and provide me and my baby with all the healthy vitamins we need.

After my pregnancy, I would love to participate in the Brooklyn Bridge Detox program. I think this would give me the kick I need to cleanse my body and start a new with my weight loss program.

In addition, I would like to prepare nutritional baby food using the NutriBullet. That way my little baby boy gets plenty of healthy meals and the best start in life.
  • Nicolette Ward So I’ve not purchased a nutribullet yet because I’m sure my fiance would object. We already have a magic bullet, but it just doesn’t get the job done in any drinkable way! From reading the posts and comments, the nutribullet can handle all the veggies and ice that re needed to make the perfect healthy shake! If I won the nutribullet, I would throw out the inferior version we have, and make lots of yummy healthy shakes to give me the boost I need to lose weight before wedding dress shopping!
  • Jenn Butler I’ve been following the success stories of the Nutribullet and the Slim and Strong and am ready to get on the saddle and buckle down and get my weight under control. I want to learn to make my own shakes instead of buying the expensive ones from juice stores. Would love to make hummus, guac, etc with it too! Hopefully, my willpower, along with the Nutribullet will help me take back control of my weight.
  • Anna McCanna Nutrition, time, being basically fit and healthy are things that are crucial to my general effectiveness and success in everyday life. I have found this out the hard way. They are all key to my performing effectively at work and in life in general. I have suffered greatly when my nutrition, etc. is off. I realize now how very sensitive my body is to not being supported and fueled both adequately and properly. The idea of this detox and the incorporation of the NutriBullet is genius! I asked my boyfriend for a juicer for Christmas to help me with my nutrition and he gave me one. I had researched the various juicers and found what is considered to be a great one and … it just takes soooo long! Long to assemble it, juice, then clean it, and it is large.  I am not trying to complain, these are what I consider to be facts. I generally do a lot of running around and due to limited time, my nutrition suffers and that breakdown leads to other breakdowns. Without the nutrition, I lack the energy, without the energy, my fitness suffers and it goes on downward from there. I enjoy eating healthy. A huge contributor to the problem for me is lack of time and convenience.

The program that Ariane is offering opens my mind up to many possibilities. Just from reviewing Ariane’s flyer and reading about the program, my mind is whirling about all the potential convenience and benefit of combining nutrition, efficiency and fat loss/detox! I am up for a turnaround in my life all the way around and if my foundation is shaky, that will limit my chances for success in that undertaking. Nutrition is one of the primary components of my nutrition! Just last week I was talking with my boyfriend about the length of time it takes me to do what I need in the morning and get in my vitamins, breakfast, etc.; (I don’t believe in shoving a handful of vitamins down my throat in one shot). I don’t think I would be able to do that anyhow. With a NutriBullet, I would be able to put all or many of my vitamins/supplements into a drink and blend it and the NutriBullet would pulverize or liquefy them so in addition to saving time ingesting them, they will be absorbed more efficiently. I looked up the NutriBullet and it seems really powerful and fast.

Often fitness/nutrition plans require time for meal preparation, etc. and there is a learning curve, etc. I imagine that incorporating the NutriBullet would streamline and simplify things a great deal! So, I would get the benefit of having the NutriBullet to whip up whatever nutritional meal Ariane has designed as part of this plan, then I can grab it and go if necessary. Quick prep, easy clean up and ingestion. Genius‼! This is so on target for a person like me. I would LOVE to have a bullet and participate in this program. It would address my limited time concern, getting in my nutrition in and then this would feed into the other areas in a positive way – priceless! Okay, by unanimous decision, my life now needs a NutriBullet!

This is so awesome. There truly is hope. Love is in the air!
  • Brandie Moreno I would love to win a nutribullet! I did the detox using my friend’s nutribullet and I’d love to keep the smoothies going! I’ve lost 8 lbs, I feel great, and I am motivated to keep it going!
  • Jennifer Elizabeth Boyer I would love to reach a healthy set body weight for my height. I have not been at a slender/slim weight that made me feel confident since 2005 and I am very depressed and frustrated with my body right now. Low self-esteem and zero confidence go with me everywhere. I exercise almost every day – sometimes twice a day! However, it seems no matter how healthy I try to eat, I still must need to make a drastic change and I feel that the NutriBullet can help me lose the extra 30 pounds I have been carrying around for eight years now. I need help as nothing I do on my own seems to work and I feel like crying right now I am so frustrated and have such hate toward my body (and body image). An endocrinologist told me yesterday that I need to “accept my weight as it is because it was not going to change.” I could have murdered him for not wanting to help me. What a waste of time and copay. Never going back to him ever again. Please pick me!
  • Samantha Kahn protein shakes and kale shakes to go plus make my own GF flour and thus save me money while getting healthier
  • Sarah Falcon So many things! An avocado, kale & protein smoothie, soups! dressings! freshly ground coffee!

    • Patricia Laboy I plan to give it to my co-worker, Alma, who called me today about seeing a doctor to prescribe medication to lose weight. She has a thyroid problem and has gain 50 pounds after going from doctor to doctor about her condition to find out what is wrong. She is desperate to see the scale go down and I try to explain to her that she needs a plan and to stick to it. She has incorporated cardio every morning, but I feel that she needs to really change her eating habits and I think one of these machines would put her in the right direction.
      August 14 at 12:47pm ·
Barb Weast Toney I was just diagnosed with cancer in my neck, lung and above my liver and if I won it I would make nothing but organic fruit and vegetable drinks to build my immune system to fight it!
      August 14 at 9:04pm ·
      Paulina Subocz Make drinkable meals!
It would change my life because it would help me eat, as in put fuel in. I don’t eat much, don’t like to, but can always get a protein shake down… so I bet I could down those cool real food liquid meals I could make with that.
And by getting everything I need (vitamins, protein, fat, etc) into my body I’d have more energy to train and could train more effectively.

High-Protein Banana Ice Cream

I spent last weekend upstate and caught up with good friends. After I got home from a wonderful barbecue with friends and sat outside, listening to the crickets, I was in the mood for something sweet. I usually don’t keep sweets in the house. I don’t even own any sugar containers, so I had to make do with what I had in the cabinets and fridge and so I created my new favorite dessert:

High-Protein Banana Ice Cream
1 frozen banana
1 scoop vanilla protein powder (I like Bluebonnet best as it dissolves into a creamy blend. Rice protein is a bit too chalky for this.)
1/2 avocado, ripe
3/4 cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk (I like Silk because it’s carrageenan-free)

Blend up all ingredients in the NutriBullet and eat right away. Totally hits the spot. You can also make your own variations by adding peanut butter or cinnamon, or dark chocolate pieces.

What’s great about it is that the sugar from the banana is balanced by the protein powder and won’t make you crash. This recipe has about 30g of carbs, 20g of protein and 10 g of fat, which are the nutrients that create a perfect fat burning meal. The fat from the avocado creates a satisfying and smooth consistency and I bet you could fool your dinner guests that you’re serving real ice cream. Just bette for their health and blood sugar!

Let me know how you like it and how you modified it to add your own flavor.

Enjoy!

I want to mention Dennis since I’ve been writing about him. Dennis is our front desk guy at the gym, where I teach my morning Slim & Strong program. Dennis is always in a good mood, always friendly and always encouraging. But, he loves to eat foods that I cringe at and for the past three years I encouraged him to come to my nutrition class or to incorporate a few better snacks into his diet. To no avail. In July he saw my boot campers come into the gym with their NutriBullet shakes in the mornings. He asked me one morning if I was drinking baby food. His interest was stoked and so I made him a shake one morning that was super-tasty: bananas, strawberries, spinach, kale and vanilla protein powder. He loved it. From that point on, I would bring him a shake in the mornings and he sucked them down. When I asked him if he wanted to join the NutriBullet Detox, he said yes faster than I realized I had actually asked him to join us. He made it happen and lost 17 lbs in 21 days. Yes, he had been eating a diet high in carbs and fat before and that’s in large part why he lost so much weight. Also, when you’re heavier, you burn more calories and you lose fat faster than someone who’s tiny and has a small frame, so that explains in part the loss. Also, Dennis did not participate in the workouts and that’s why he didn’t qualify for the grand prize of $500, so it goes to show you that the power of diet is tremendous and exercise isn’t always driving weight loss.

So, I hope next time you see Dennis, you’ll congratulate him on his great progress and ask him what the shake of the day was. We all like some accountability and Dennis sure knows he has a fan club now :-)
Congratulations to all the other Detoxers who participated remotely. You took 21 days for yourself, to focus on creating an environment in which you can thrive and function better. This is just one step towards creating the life you want, but it’s a big one you took in learning about yourselves. Keep at it. It doesn’t have to be perfect to work, it just needs to be consistent.
Are you ready to join the next NutriBullet Detox? It starts September 15th.
Sign up soon before prices go up on September 5th. Here’s the scoop.
You will have 3 options to join:
1. Take 6 indoor classes with me
2. Take 6 outdoor classes
3. Participate remotely

Win A NutriBullet! Enter by next Wednesday!

You’ve heard quite a few success stories of people who used the NutriBullet to lose weight, feel better, improve their health, and energy. Want to win a NutriBullet?! Tell us what you plan to do with it and how owning one of these bad boys could change your life!

Contest ends next Wednesday, August 21st, so get your entries in ASAP below or like us on Facebook (Brooklyn Bridge Boot Camp) and enter.

How do you lose 13 lbs in 7 days? NutriBullet Detox!

Say again that changing your diet without working out doesn’t make a difference! If you’ve been taking my classes and nutrition workshops, you’ve heard me say this more than once. Diet accounts for at least 80-90% of your fat loss. Working out can only do so much to undo a bad diet. Some weeks I work out 10-12 hours and if my diet is not on track, I can still easily put on a few pounds, so let me be proof that even the most intense and effective workouts cannot undo poor food choices.

So, to further proof the point that diet is (almost) everything, I wanted to give you an update on Dennis’s progress. Dennis is the cutie at the front desk at the gym. All the Slim & Strong gals adore him and the boys are fond of him too because you can’t help but love him. He’s always smiling. Always greeting you with a happy and welcoming face and you just can’t help to walk into the class room in a grumpy mood. In other words, he’s the perfect front desk guy. I used to bust his chops for eating bagels with cream cheese for breakfast or jelly on toast. I have tried for a while to encourage him to try a different route, but to no avail. One day as I was walking out after teaching a very sweaty morning Slim & Strong class, Dennis asked me if I was eating my baby food again. He was referring to my NutriBullet shake in my hand and he was getting curious because he had seen a lot of my Detox participants walk in in the mornings with the shakes. One day after he asked me what these shakes tasted like, I offered to make him one and he agreed to taste it. The next morning I concocted the “Dennis Special’, sure to include some berries and banana to make the first intro to the shakes a sweet one. I also added protein powder to fill him up, along with some spinach and a bit of ginger. The first sip resulted in an uncertain face but the second one caused delight. He liked it! Not only did he like it, he actually was astounded at how great it tasted and he chucked it down. Since then I haven’t stopped and try to create different combos daily. They no longer contain fruit, but always veggies and protein powder.

Almost two weeks ago I suggested he may want to try to join the Detox Challenge if he’s such a fan of the shakes. He accepted immediately after I shared with him the rules. Can I tell you that I was in disbelief? I’ve seen and worked with a lot of resistant people and a lot of stubborn clients, but I thought he was one creature of habit that I couldn’t crack. Well, it’s been 7 days and he has lost 12 lbs already. He is eating clean, stocking his fridge with veggies, cooking and making shakes. And, the best thing is he was with family this weekend and surrounded by rice and beans and other non-detox foods and he simply resisted and ate his veggies. I cannot tell you how happy that made me. I’m psyched by his instant success and by his openness to trying something completely new and out of the box. I’m his biggest fan right now and look forward to hearing about his experience every morning.

Here’s what he wrote in an email to me after the first few days:

“Well, my first day of detox was  a little scary for me because I didn’t know what to expect. As day the went on I started thinking to myself  I wasn’t going to eat anymore sugar, meaning no cookies, no more donuts or bagels, pizza etc. I started to get myself all worked up just thinking of all these things. But I want to change the way I eat, so the best way to do this is through detox.
Now, Day two was little different for me. I felt good and just a little lighter than usual. I was moving just a bit faster…and eating healthier ….no headache , no grouchiness or sleepless nights. Today is day three and it’s getting a bit tougher, but thanks to Ariane and her healthy morning drinks, I can start my day right. ….Until tomorrow …xoxoxo. ;)

Dennis is a rockstar in my eyes for being so open-minded and willing to give something completely foreign a go. And, his success so far makes me speechless.

Ready to give it a go? Here is what seems to be the most popular NutriBullet Shake among my Detoxers so far:
Pumpkin Love

1/2 can of pumpkin
1 cup of kale
1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
1/2 carrot
1/2 thumb ginger
Vega Vanilla Chai Protein Powder

Add water to the max line and blend. Enjoy!

8 lbs lost. 8 inches down.

Wednesday was our last Slim & Strong morning session. One of my most dedicated boot campers, Debbie, won first place. Instead of opting for the $200 gift card to City Sports, she opted to apply the money towards the next Slim & Strong Session. I call that paying it forward :-)

Here are Debbie’s stats:
Weight loss: 8.2 lbs
Body fat loss: .8% (she was dehydrated, which raises body fat measurements)
3.7 lbs muscle lost (happens initially when calories are reduced and exercise increased)
4.5 lbs of pure fat lost

The second prize of 10 Boot Camp sessions goes to Evelyn:
Weight loss: 2 lbs
Body Fat loss: 2.3% (which translates into 1.5 lbs of muscle gained and 3.5 lbs of fat lost!)

The third prize of 5 Boot Camp sessions goes to our newbie, Elizabeth:
Weight loss: 3.6 lbs
Body fat loss: 1.5%
Muscle lost: .63 lbs (she minimized muscle loss)
Fat lost: 3 lbs

Congrats to everyone!
We had a good month with some impressive numbers dropped. And, the interesting part is that the winners had perfect attendance! Goes to show you that consistency pays off!

Debbie isn’t going to stop anytime soon. She’s signed up for the NutriBullet Detox next, which starts on Tuesday. If you want to join, sign up by this Sunday.

There are 3 options to participate:

  • In person – take 6 indoor workouts
  • In person – take 6 outdoor workouts
  • Remotely – get daily emails and a team mate to keep you accountable

You will receive daily emails with shopping lists, recipes for smoothies, recipes for clean meals, supplement suggestions to stimulate detoxification, a step-by-step guide to colon, liver, kidney and skin detox, and two weekly workouts to boost fat loss.

Most importantly, you’ll gain a new relationship to your body and food. If you need a serious kickstart to fat loss and to improving your health, this is your chance. The next NutriBullet Detox won’t start until after the Summer.
